The European Union’s special envoy for the Middle East peace process, Sven Koopmans, has reaffirmed that the only viable solution for lasting peace in the region is the establishment of two sovereign and secure states—Israel and Palestine.
Koopmans emphasized that “true security can only come through real peace,” highlighting the necessity of a diplomatic resolution to the ongoing conflict.
His remarks came in response to a controversial proposal by former U.S. President Donald Trump, which suggested taking control of Gaza and displacing its Palestinian residents. The proposal has been met with widespread condemnation and rejection.
Appointed in May 2021, Koopmans serves as the EU’s special representative for the Middle East peace process. His mandate includes actively contributing to a final settlement of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict based on the two-state solution, in accordance with UN Security Council Resolution 2334 (2016).
