EU announces new €120 million aid package for Gaza

The European Commission today announced a new €120 million aid package for Gaza, bringing the total EU humanitarian assistance to Gaza to over €450 million since 2023, in addition to the airlift flights that delivered over 3,800 tonnes of aid.  President Ursula von der Leyen said: “The ceasefire agreement and the release of hostages provide much-needed hope, but the humanitarian situation in Gaza remains bleak. Europe will provide €120 million in aid in 2025, along with tonnes of in-kind assistance, to continue supporting the Palestinians.  The aid package will include: food assistance to address acute food insecurity and malnutrition; healthcare assistance to support the functioning of health facilities and the provision of medical supplies; water, sanitation and hygiene support to allow access to water and sanitation services; shelter assistance to provide safe and secure housing for those displaced; and protection assistance to support the safety and dignity of vulnerable populations. The EU will work closely with UN agencies and other humanitarian partners to ensure rapid delivery of aid, according to the statement.

EU Condemns Israel’s Ban on UNRWA Activities, Reaffirms Support for Agency

The European Union (EU) has strongly condemned Israel’s recent decision to ban the activities of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) in the region. In a statement issued by the EU’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Kaya Kallas, the bloc expressed concerns over the move, warning that it exacerbates the humanitarian crisis for Palestinian refugees. Kallas emphasized that the ban complicates UNRWA’s ability to deliver essential services to refugees in the West Bank, East Jerusalem, and the Gaza Strip. She described the decision as a direct threat to the survival of millions who rely on the agency’s aid. The EU also rejected attempts to undermine the 1967 agreement between UNRWA and the Israeli government, which forms the legal basis for the agency’s operations in the occupied territories. Kallas warned that any disruption to this agreement could severely hinder humanitarian efforts. Call for Ceasefire and Accountability Kallas urged all parties to accelerate the implementation of a ceasefire agreement, stressing that stability in the region depends on ensuring uninterrupted aid to Palestinian refugees. She reiterated the EU’s unwavering support for UNRWA, calling for the swift implementation of recommendations from an independent review group to address allegations against some agency staff. The EU representative also called on the United Nations to strengthen oversight mechanisms to ensure UNRWA’s neutrality and accountability. She emphasized the need for transparency in the agency’s operations to maintain trust and uphold humanitarian standards. Ongoing EU Support for UNRWA Kallas reaffirmed the EU’s commitment to supporting UNRWA’s mission, stating that the bloc will continue to provide the necessary resources to enable the agency to carry out its vital work. She highlighted the importance of international cooperation in addressing the humanitarian needs of Palestinian refugees and promoting long-term peace in the region.
